Course Overview

Empower Pathways is structured into four progressive units:

Introduction

Introduction to Recovery-Oriented Systems of Care (ROSC)

Introduce core principles that guide recovery-oriented approaches. We'll explore the framework of ROSC, its emergence as a transformative model, and the Alberta Recovery Model as a real-world example of ROSC in action.

Foundation

Foundations in Addiction and Recovery

Delve into the neurobiology of addiction and the transformative journey of recovery. We’ll also introduce the concept of recovery capital—an essential resource for supporting sustained recovery—and provide tools for assessing and building it.

Clinical Perspectives

Clinical Perspectives and Evidence-Based Approaches

Explore clinical perspectives and evidence-based practices in recovery-oriented care. Topics include treatment planning, relapse prevention, trauma-informed care, motivational interviewing, and more!

Integrate

The Therapeutic Community Model

Learn about the principles, structures, and operational practices that define recovery communities (RC) and therapeutic living units (TLUs) in Alberta. Reflect on how material covered in earlier units can be applied in specialized recovery-oriented settings.

What to Expect

Course Delivery

This course is delivered entirely online and asynchronously, allowing learners to progress at their own pace. The estimated time for completion is 35 hours. Learners enrolled through an educational institution, employer, or therapeutic program should adhere to any timeline requirements set by their supervisor.

Course Material

Required materials: An electronic device with audio capabilities and a stable internet connection to access the course on Brightspace.
Recommended Readings: Additional resources and readings are provided throughout the course to enhance learning but are not required for course completion.

There is no textbook required for this course.

Knowledge Testing

Participants will encounter multiple knowledge checkpoints throughout the course, consisting of brief multiple-choice quizzes.

RTIA Certificate

Participants will be awarded the RTIA Empower Pathways Certificate upon completion of the course.
